Mountain Biking Gooseberry Mesa: A Slickrock Icon in Southern Utah

Gooseberry Mesa isn’t just one of Utah’s best rides—it’s the benchmark for technical slickrock riding. Perched high above the Virgin River valley with jaw-dropping views of Zion National Park, this sandstone playground has become legendary among mountain bikers. If you love punchy technical climbs, fast chunky descents, and navigating a trail like a puzzle, Gooseberry’s got your name all over it.

Why It’s Iconic

The mesa’s signature slickrockountain Biking Gooseberry Mesa: Utah’s Slickrock Playground

Gooseberry Mesa is one of Utah’s most iconic mountain bike rides—and for good reason. This high desert mesa near Zion National Park delivers an unforgettable mix of technical slickrock climbs, short punchy descents, and panoramic views that’ll make you want to stop and stare (if your legs let you).

This is the ride that put Southern Utah on the mountain biking map.

What Makes Gooseberry So Good?

Gooseberry is a slickrock wonderland. The trails wind across massive sandstone slabs, through juniper forests, and along mesa edges with insane views of Zion’s cliffs. It’s not about big mileage here—it’s about big fun. The ride constantly challenges you with quick ups and downs, rock rolls, and line choices that keep you focused.

Even better? E-bikes are allowed on the Gooseberry Mesa trail system, so riders of different fitness levels can experience the full loop together.

The Best Route

If you want to experience the best of Gooseberry in one go, ride this loop:

Practice Loop → South Rim → The Point → North Rim

  • Practice Loop is a great warm-up with a little bit of everything.
  • South Rim takes you along ledgy terrain with expansive views.
  • The Point offers a jaw-dropping overlook and makes a perfect snack stop.
  • North Rim brings you home with more slickrock fun and technical features.

It’s about 10 miles total and very doable in a few hours—though you might take longer if you’re stopping for all the views (and photos).

Easier Alternatives: Gander & Wire Mesa

If Gooseberry’s tech sounds like a bit much, no worries—there are mellower options nearby:

  • Gander Trail offers smoother riding with just enough challenge to keep it fun.
  • Wire Mesa is a local favorite with flowy lines, great views, and fewer ledgy sections. It’s an excellent warm-up ride or intro to mesa-style riding.

Both trails still capture the essence of the region—just with a little less gnar.

Pro tip: Camp at the top of the mesa for unreal sunrises and quiet mornings. The views are unmatched, and you’ll be rolling onto the trail before most riders even leave town.
